Master Wong Koon Hoong

(7th DAN Black Belt)(KOR)

 

MASTER Wong Koon Hoong began learning Taekwondo since year 1970. He obtained his 1ST Dan Black Belt in 1972 and currently holds a 7th Dan Black Belt (Kukkiwon)(Korea). Master Wong was qualified as an International Kyorugi Referee in 1980 and is currently a 1ST Class World Taekwondo Federation International Kyorugi Referee. In year 2011, Master Wong also obtained his 3RD Class World Taekwondo Federation International Poomsae Referee qualification. Master Wong is also a Senior Examiner (TM) and qualified National Instructor under Taekwondo Malaysia (TM) and Skim Perlesenan Kejurulatihan Kebangsaan (MSN). Master Wong’s other qualifications includes Sport Science Level 2 (MSN)(1991), Certificate in Sports Admin (United States Sports Academy)(1991) and Certificate in Sports Admin and Leadership)(International Olympic Committee – Solidarity Programme)(1991).

 

Master Wong was one of the pioneer members of Malaysia Taekwondo Association (MTA/WTF) where he served the association for more than 33 years before the formation of Taekwondo Malaysia in year 2010. Master Wong service in the association includes:-

 

• Assistant Treasurer General (1977-1979)

• Treasurer General (1979-1999)

• Vice Chairman (2004-2005)

• Senior Grading Examiner

 

Master Wong is also passionate in officiating championships as a Kyorugi Referee / Poomsae Referee and has also served in the Referee Board of Malaysia Taekwondo Association (MTA/WTF) as:-

 

• Exco Member (1978-1985)

• Secretary (1985-1999)

• Exco Member (1999-2005)

• Vice Chairman (2005-2007)

• Chairman (2007-2009)

• Lecturer and Examiner since 1985

 

Master Wong has officiated countless Taekwondo Championships from Club Championships to International Championships. Amongst the notable Championships are:-

 

• Asian Taekwondo championships – 1990 Taipei

• World Taekwondo championships – 1993 Greece, 1999 Canada

• World Junior Taekwondo championships – 1998 Turkey

• Asian Games – 1998 Bangkok

• SEA Games – 1987 Jakarta, 1995 Chiang Mai, 2005 Manila

• ASEAN Taekwondo championships – 2004 Jogjakarta

• Commonwealth Taekwondo championships – 2011 Chennai

 

Master Wong was also appointed as the Team Manager under Malaysia Taekwondo Association (MTA/WTF) for:-

 

• 7th Asian TKD Championships, Darwin, Australia (1986)

• 1st Vietnam TKD Open Championships, HCM City (1990)

• 12th Asian TKD Championships, HCM City, Vietnam (1996)

• Vietnam InvitationTKD Championships, Hanoi, Vietnam (1999 )

• Asian Qualification Tournament for 2008 Beijing Olympics, HCM City, Vietnam (2007)

 

Master Wong also served in Persatuan Taekwondo Selangor (including Kuala Lumpur) as a General Treasurer (1977-1979), Persatuan Taekwondo Wilayah Persekutuan (UWPTA) as one of the founding members and General Treasurer (1979-1983), Olympic Council of Malaysia as an Internal Auditor for 2 terms (1997/2000).

 

When Taekwondo Malaysia (TM) was formed in 2010, Master Wong has been appointed as the Advisor for the Referee Board and is also one of the main Lecturer & Examiner for the Referee Board. In year 2013, Master Wong has also been appointed as the Chairman for the Referee Board of Taekwondo Kuala Lumpur (TKL/TM). In 2015, Master Wong has been appointed as Chairman for the Referee Board of Taekwondo Kuala Lumpur (TKL/TM)

 

Master Wong was appointed as the Chief Instructor for Pewaris Taekwondo Club since year 2010, which was formed together with other Senior Instructors. He is also the Main Examiner for all students and members of Pewaris Taekwondo Club.

Master Wong is currently perusing his 8th DAN Black Belt (Korea) and S Class WTF International Kyorugi qualification.

 

Master Wong hopes that those who practices Taekwondo will always remember to practice the fundamental basics of Taekwondo (Martial Arts) and not just only for competition purposes (Sports) as he believes that there must always be a balance between the two.
